What is Aerial Silks?
Aerial silks, also known as aerial fabric or tissue is a combination of gymnastics, dance and acrobats performed on suspended fabric. Artists, also known as aerialists, climb the fabric without the use of safety lines and use the fabric to wrap themselves into and out of various positions. Contrary to its name, the fabrics most commonly used for aerial silks are not silk but include nylon, polyester, and other synthetic fabrics.
I don't have a lot of upper body strength. Can I still take classes?
Of course! You don't need to be an athlete to take aerial classes. We start all of our classes low to the ground and have tailored our curriculum to allow you to build strength and confidence in the fabrics over time. If you have previous dance, yoga, Pilates or gymnastics experience, that's great but not necessary.
What should I wear to class?
We recommend that you wear a breathable athletic top (you may also bring a long sleeved shirt that covers your armpits) and leggings or yoga pants that cover the backs of your knees. Men may wear athletic shorts, but be aware that loose shorts will ride up when upside-down. No shoes, socks, jewelry or belts are allowed when working in the fabrics. Please do not put on any lotions or perfumes before class.
How do I register for class?
We recommend that you sign up in advance to secure your spot as we keep our class size limited for safety and individual attention in class. All of our classes are prepay only. To secure a slot, click on the schedule tab and register for class through the PIKE13 system. You may also stop by the studio and sign up and pay for class in person.
Should I eat before class?
As with any physical activity, we recommend that you do not eat anything immediately before class but instead eat something light approximately an hour prior to class time.
I have an injury, can I still attend class?
If you are injured, please consult a physician before engaging in any aerial activity. If you are cleared to be physically active and your injury does not impede your health, movement or your ability to follow instructions, we are willing to work with you on a case by case basis to determine what will best suit your needs. However, we reserve the right to turn any student away that we feel may put themselves, our students or our staff at risk.
Do you offer aerial bungee classes?
We do not offer aerial bungee classes at this time, however, if you are looking for a way to stay fit on the ground, come take a Fit to Fly class with us!
How old do I have to be to take classes?
Our general classes are for students 18 years or older, however, we offer youth and teen classes to students between 11 and 17 years old. There is no maximum age, we have had the pleasure of teaching and working with aerialists as young as 71!
Classes must be cancelled at least 12 hours in advance or class is forfeited. Private lessons must be cancelled at least 24 hours in advance or lesson is forfeited. All class packages activate on the date of purchase, not on the first visit. Purchases are non-refundable and non-transferable, and we do not offer extensions.
Students may cancel a class, private or semi-private lesson by emailing us directly at firstname.lastname@example.org, calling the studio or by canceling online. If you are unable to notify us in advance of your class or appointment, please note that payment will be forfeit and a late cancel fee may be charged.
It is our intent to always offer our scheduled classes, even if they are not full. That said, if a class does not have two or more persons registered three hours prior to class, we may cancel that class. Those who are signed up will be notified via email. If a class is cancelled three times in a four-week period, we may need to remove it from our schedule.
